Putumayo Agroclimatic Bulletin - JUNE 2025

Monitoring the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Phenomenon

According to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) June 12 of this year, sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific ranged from 0.1 °C to +0.4 °C, indicating NEUTRAL conditions. Based on probability, these conditions are expected to occur between June–July–August with an 82% probability and between August–September–October with a 59% probability, respectively.

It is important to note that the neutral event is also a convective system; therefore, if it encounters surface moisture (as in meteorology), it would trigger brief showers, while in the absence of moisture, it would lead to strong winds and the passage of clouds. Additionally, keep in mind that not all parts of the country respond to this event in the same way.

Putumayo Agroclimatic Bulletin - March 2025

Currently, La Niña conditions are
weakening, and a transition to neutral conditions is expected in the coming months. Neutral ENSO conditions are forecast to persist through June–July–August, with a 62% probability.
During February, ocean temperatures in the
equatorial Pacific have decreased, although there was warming off the coast of South America. However, this warming is superficial and does not indicate a return to El Niño. Winds and atmospheric conditions continue to reflect La Niña conditions, but with a trend toward neutrality.
For farmers, this transition may mean changes in rainfall patterns.

General Recommendations

• Prepare the seedbeds for the plantings and replantings in the second half of 2025.
Renewal • Regulate temporary shading in plots younger than 24 months.
• This is the last opportunity to recover lost sites in plots renewed by clear-cutting or new plantings.
• Select suckers in plots renewed by clear-cutting during the second half of 2024. Remember to apply a protective fungicide to the wound to prevent infections from Macana canker.

• For coffee plantations in production, apply the recommended fertilizer for the first half of the year based on the results of the soil analysis

Let’s remember that...

The department of Putumayo has two rainfall patterns: monomodal and bimodal. The monomodal pattern is characterized by a single period of heavy rainfall during the year. The municipalities of Colón, Mocoa, and Puerto Leguízamo fall within this pattern, with the exception of the La Tagua station, San Francisco, and Santiago.

Putumayo Agroclimatic Bulletin - January 2025

The Putumayo Agroclimatic Technical Committee (MTA) is a forum for dialogue and analysis among local, national, and regional stakeholders. Its purpose is to understand potential climate patterns based on scientific data and empirical knowledge, and to develop recommendations for mitigating the risks associated with climate variability in the agricultural sector.

General Recommendations

  • Pruning: Perform training and maintenance pruning to improve air circulation, reduce moisture buildup, and prevent disease.
  • Soil assessment: Assess the condition of the soil and identify areas with low fertility or drainage problems.
  • Organic amendments: Incorporate composted manure or organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.
  • Harvest: Take advantage of dry conditions to dry the harvested grain.
